Jean Cockburn

Jean Cockburn graduated in Combined Arts from the University of Leicester (History of Art with Archaeology, French and Music). She then studied the clarinet with Professor John Davies and took part in masterclasses with Antony Pay on the Post-Graduate Performers’ Course at the Royal Academy of Music, where she won the Manson Prize for ensemble playing.

Jean has performed widely as a soloist and chamber musician. With the Ventura Wind Octet she has appeared at the South Bank Centre, St Martin in the Fields and the Bath Festival and with Trio Chalumeau at many music societies throughout Britain. Jean has performed the Mozart Clarinet Concerto at Brecon Cathedral, St James’s Church, Piccadilly and Castletown House, Co. Kildare; the Finzi Concerto with the Chiltern Camerata; and Krommer’s First Concerto for Two Clarinets with Paul Harris in Oxford. She has also collaborated with choreographers and designers, composing and performing for contemporary dance, and several prominent composers have written music for her. She plays with the Cotswold Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestra of Stowe Opera.

Jean is a dedicated teacher of music and has enjoyed guiding young people at music services in London at Bedford School and The Perse School for Girls, Cambridge. She is currently teaching the clarinet at Bloxham School, Oxford High School and privately.
